Für viele der beprobten Stationen im niedersächsischen Wattenmeer liegen bereits seit 1987 Daten eines küstennahen Transektes (Ems bis Elbe) vor. Die Station auf Norderney sowie die Station in Wilhelmshaven werden seit 1994 beprobt. Für die schleswig-holsteinischen Küstengewässer liegen für einige der Stationen Daten ab 2000 vor.

Das Monitoring der Artenzusammensetzung, Abundanz und Biomasse des Phytoplankton s wurde in der AWZ der Nordsee ab 2012 ausgesetzt und findet momentan nur noch in den Küsten- und Übergangsgewässern statt.
