Description sampling method:

Untersucht wird die Seevogel-Kolonie auf der Insel Helgoland. Ausgewählte Plots (Beobachtungsstandpunkte) decken einen großen und möglichst repräsentativen Teil der gesamten Kolonie ab. Die Erfassung des Nestmülls erfolgt zum Höhepunkt der Brutsaison im Juni/Juli, wenn alle Nester besetzt sind und der Nestbau abgeschlossen ist. Da die Kolonie selbst nicht zugänglich ist, werden zur Identifizierung der verschiedenen Müllkategorien in den Nestern und der verstrickten Vögel, Fernglas und Spektiv verwendet. Für die Bestimmung von Abfallarten wird die von der „Technical Subgroup on Marine Litter“ vorgeschlagene Meeres-Abfall-Liste verwendet (MSFD GES Technical Subgroup on Marine Litter 2013). Um die Menge an Kunststoff pro Nest zu klassifizieren, wird ein vierstufiges Bewertungssystem definiert. Um verstrickte Vögel zu erfassen, werden die ausgewählten Monitoringplots an mehreren Terminen während der gesamten Brutsaison mit Fernglas und Spektiv nach Opfern abgesucht.
